3M experts share the right ways to choose and use tapes

3M Sales Manager of Industrial Adhesives and Tapes Division Horace Tong and Application Engineer of Technical Department Eric Cheung were interviewed by Ming Pao on July 8 to share their insight in choosing and using tapes and adhesives.

Horace, who have been marketing adhesives and tapes for 25 years, told the reporters that tapes with different adhesive and backing materials have diverse functions. A wide array of tapes is available in the market, ranging from tapes generally used in office or at home, to flame-resistant insulating tapes for electric wires, and industrial tapes that resist high temperature and moisture. Tapes are no simple things, and consumers should carefully read the instructions printed on the package to choose those that best fit their required applications.

Eric explained how the levels of adhesion are affected by different adhesives and surface materials. For example, a metal or ceramic surface will have better adhesive results than a surface with glossy or waterproof coatings. He also reminds users to clean the uneven surface before application, because moisture and dirt will hinder the adhesiveness of the tapes.
